The 5th Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth

The 5th Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth.

40cm x 40cm. Acrylics on board. Framed (no glass.)
Here’s a cozy family scene – the duke and his wife Georgiana (ancestress of the late Diana, Princess of Wales) with mutual friend Lady Elizabeth Foster, and the duke’s child little Caroline Williams, outside the Chatsworth Orangery. In fact the household was a somewhat scandalous ‘menage a trois’ and Georgiana – one of the great Society hostesses of the Georgian era, was permanently in debt due to her weakness for gambling. The Duke’s nickname was ‘canis’ (Latin for ‘dog’) due to his fondness for them.
