Florence Nightingale & Her Sister Parthenope

Florence Nightingale & Her Sister Parthenope
43cm x 53 cm. Acrylics on board. Framed (no glass)
Few people know that the famous hospital reformer was an avid animal lover. In this picture I’ve surrounded her with creatures from various stages of her life story. Spot Athena the owl, who she rescued in Athens, Jimmy the Tortoise – a pet of the soldiers at Scutari hospital, Cap the sheepdog (one of her first patients) and two of her beloved Persian cats – ‘Disraeli’ and ‘Mr Bismarck.’ She became convinced of her vocation during a life changing trip to Egypt – hence the camel on the firescreen at the rear of her imaginary Victorian lounge.
